And so I laid perfectly still
In my ear I heard Insomnia creep
Chuckling “Count all the sheep I have killed.”
Basically this is what happens when you try to study but can't concentrate due to lack of sleep, then decide to take a nap but can't sleep yet again.

I remember from my junior high days, how I sometimes decided to study for essays lying on the bed on my back. The result was me snoring with the book covering my face. The difference here is that I took a nap undecidedly and certainly got some sleep. 
I can relate with the way you're depicting insomnia here. The brutally slaughtered sheep seem to have failed in outrunning the murderous personification of insomnia, and that's how I can sometimes imagine it. I could give up at the point where the sheep #754 passes me and they all freeze, allowing Insomnia to catch up and get all butchery.
